Run!

This weekend we went for a walk to enjoy the beautiful weather.  Owen loves to get outside and after being cooped up for a couple of months we knew a the fresh air would do us all good.  So we grabbed our sweaters, tossed the camera in the car and off we went.

Last year this time Owen wasn’t walking yet.  I can remember going to this same trail with my sister, Owen, and the stroller.  It was so much more fun leaving the stroller at home.

We don’t take it for granted that our boy can walk.  He was almost 2 when he took his first steps and though it is almost 10 months later I still have moments of awe.  At least once a week I see my boy walking around and I get a catch in my throat and have to fight back tears.

Owen has recently upped his game by carrying items around the house and starting to run.  When he gets upset and has to come looking for me, he can really pick up speed, making his point all the more forcefully when he come crashing into me at high-speed.

Watching him run indoors is great but what a huge difference it is to see him outside dashing about and enjoying all that nature has to offer.  Sure, he fell several times in the snow and needed to be comforted.  Yes we got our shoes muddy and our socks soaked.  It was still a great day.

Owen also became completely fascinated with his shadow on our stroll.  He kept looking at it as if he wondered why this thing was following us.  He would take off and stop suddenly just to see if it was still with him.  Finally he seemed to understand that he could control this strange dark figure, he would raise his arms and fling them down just to laugh as his shadow followed suit.  Who knew that a shadow could bring so much entertainment?

As we walked and enjoyed the sunlight spilling down through the tree branches all I could think about was how very blessed we are to be raising this very special boy.
